Mortal Kombat X has been out for almost a month now and it’s a fantastic fighting game. I do have some complaints about the game, but most of them are just fanboy, nitpicky type stuff. The game is packed with content that has kept me very busy for quite some time. There is one thing however about the game that just isn’t as fun as it could be. That would be the online play, mainly ranked matches. I don’t remember exactly what my record is but last time I checked it was around wins and 25 losses.
I am not a great player by any means. If a score of 10 is Perfect Legend and a 1 is a scrublord, full auto Jaqui spammer, I would put myself around a 6.

Considering previous versions of Mortal Kombat had graced arcades, all manner of consoles, PCs, Amigas and even had the dubious distinction of being violent enough to encourage Congress to create the Entertainment Software Rating Board, whose ratings are still used in the United States today, you’d think one of the earlier titles would have been the most lucrative for their makers.
But it wasn’t until the other week that Ed Boon, co-creator of the series, announced on the Major Nelson podcast – run by Microsoft’s director of programming – that Mortal Kombat MK9 , the reboot of the franchise which was banned in Australia for a couple of years, was the best selling title in the franchise to date. It’s not only a mark of how much the accessibility of Mortal Kombat was missed – the timing window for combo strings, special moves, wake-up attacks and other staples of fighting game mechanics have always been more lenient in Mortal Kombat – but an indication of how much NetherRealm’s efforts in entwining a coherent, playable story into a fighting game was appreciated.
Having proved the reboot wasn’t a one-hit wonder with Injustice: Gods Among Us , MKX now carries the weight of expectation, not just in the delivery of a plausible story mode – a standard not levied against any fighting game in the last three decades – but also the revitalisation of Mortal Kombat as a franchise and, more importantly, a force on the competitive circuit. Most will start with the story mode, considering the success of its predecessor, although MKX ‘s continuation of the Earthrealm-Outworld-Netherrealm triumvirate lacks much of the charm, cheer and, most notably, length of MK9.
